making something out of nothing

One thing that I often do is to look at something and think how I could change it, and what it could be used for.
A perfect example of this is a wooden box that I've had kicking around for a few months. It was given to my daughter for her birthday, and contained a fab set of wooden magnetic dressing up dolls. The box was really for display purposes, and not something a tiny tot should have to play with. I decanted the magnets into a safer box, but decided to keep hold of the wooden box. But why? What would I do with it? No idea, but I knew I had to keep it for something.

Yesterday inspiration hit, and I set to work. If you are a regular reader then you will know by know exactly how I make over an object. This was no different: undercoat, paint, paint again, .. and again... take to the dry paint with sandpaper. I only give a dark undercoat if the wood is light to start off with. When I distress something I want it to show up. When the paint was dry I decided to use wallpaper to decorate the back of each compartment. I considered using different floral fabrics instead of wallpaper, but thought this would look better. (I must point out that when I took the photos of the finished box the wallpaper paste was still wet, which is why it looks a bit bubbly. Now it's dried out, the wallpaper is flat. So if you do any wallpapering and think it's gone wrong because it's looking bubbly, don't worry, give it time to dry and it will be fine).

I have no idea where this will live, or if it will be a shadow box or a storage/display box, it's just something I had to do. Next week I plan to do some 'out of season' crafting. For no other reason than I have a stash of amazingly fabulous goodies that just can't wait to use!
Before I go, a couple of things. Sonalida, thank you for your comment. I would love to visit you but can't find a link to your blog! And to Lucey, thank you so much for the warning about [mercurised glass vases]. After reading your comment I checked my vases, and there was indeed little bits of silver floating in the water. I have taken care of it, and now use a jam jar inside each vase. Had you not let me know about this my precious vases would be plain glass! Thank you for letting me know this could happen.
