an easy project .... eventually

'good enough is good enough'. How many times have I said those words when talking about working on a project? Rather a lot. And yet yesterday, I managed to forget that, and seemed determined to make something 'perfectly', in the process creating far more hard work than was needed.

Sometimes it's good to remind yourself that things DON'T have to be perfect. Especially if it's something for yourself. Actually, I almost pride myself on my imperfect projects.

Last week, a catalogue plopped through the letterbox. I leafed through and saw what was described as a 'Jewellery Frame'. Basically, a picture frame without the glass, a fabric board, and covered in hooks to hold jewellery. I loved it. But I did not love the £32 they wanted for it.

I decided to make my own.

Bought the items needed, total cost £6. Gathered the tools I needed - or thought I needed.

I started by removing the glass, then stretching fabric over the backing card, stapling in place. The backing card was returned to the frame.
Then I laid out the picture hooks to where I wanted to fix them, and marked where I wanted to attach them.
This is where I lost the plot for a while. I wanted to screw the hooks in place. Screws that I had were too long and too wide. So that wouldn't work. The "brilliant" plan after that was to cut the nails down, and use them like pins, to pin the hooks in place, then go back later and glue the backs to hold in place ... what the heck was I thinking? Talk about difficult and too complicated.

First of all, have you ever tried cutting down nails? The description of 'hard as nails' is there for a reason! I nearly broke my wrist cutting down two. And then they poked through the back and needed covering up. Not exactly straightforward.

The mist cleared, and good sense came back. The Glue Gun! Glue the hooks on. They were for holding jewellery, nothing too heavy.

A few minutes later, all hooks were glued on. Yes, you can see the glue, but this is something that will eventually be hung on the inside of my wardrobe. Really did not matter about glue blobs!

And I have somewhere to hang the bits of jewellery that I wear most often. For now it's on the bedside table, with all the rest of my junk, but when the time comes to tidy up and put things away, it will stand nicely on the back of the shelf in my wardrobe.

So glad I thought to glue the hooks on, or I'd still be trying to cut down nails now!
