Egg candle

I was reading the latest edition of [Mollie Makes] at the weekend, and really liked this picture of an Easter centre piece. I particularly liked the egg shells with scraps of candles inside.

It got me thinking.

I don't especially want a great big egg box on a table, but the egg candle was something I liked and wanted to do myself.

I thought using tea lights in egg shells placed in egg cups would be a nicer - and safer - way of using the idea.

Today, I took a hard boiled egg and sliced in two, but not in perfect halves, the bottom half needed to be largest. Then I scooped out the egg, and poured melted wax in the bottom of the empty shell. This was for two reasons, to give a little height and a safe base for the tealight, and also to give a bit of weight to it to keep it stable.

Once the wax was in and set, I checked the height was right for the tealight. I wanted it white, so I grabbed a sample pot and got painting. Once dry, I put the egg in an eggcup and lit the candle. I've made this for the display of white flowers and china I've got in the kitchen, but it would make a simple Easter table decoration. Dotted along a table with small vases of spring flowers, it would look rather nice. Just paint the shells the colours you want them to be.
