Valentine hearts & flowers

I don't go overboard with decorating for Valentine's Day. I just have a few little decorations here and there, a mix of homemade and shop bought.

On Tuesday, Gorgeous Girl and I went into town to do a spot of shopping. I had a list of shops to visit, including the haberdashery shop.
Thankfully the haberdashery shop is on the edge of town, so I had to walk past it on our way home or I would have forgotten about it completely. I chose some pink ribbon and a few fat quarters of fabric. I was delighted to find a pale pink FQ sprinkled with tiny hearts. The intention was to make some heart shaped bunting to put on Gingerbread House, out in the garden (see previous post).

I make bunting as simply as possible, it's just for me so it doesn't have to be perfect. Even though I kept it simple, making heart shaped bunting was a lot trickier than I expected it to be. As a result, I decided it was too good to put outside, and instead I have it on the mirror in the living room. It does look pretty, but I wouldn't make it again. It was a far more fiddly than using triangles! I don't know where this idea came from, it popped into my head this morning, but I'm sure I've seen it somewhere before. To add a little floral prettiness to the stair bannisters, I tied silk flowers to a few of them. It looks a bit over the top in the photo, but in real life it is quite subtle.
I also wanted to make a very simple heart wreath, something delicate and fuss free. Violets are very dear to my heart, so I chose silk violets to use. So easy to make. I cut a wire coat hanger and taped into a heart shape, then I cut strips of green velvet fabric (to look a bit like moss) and stretched it (stretching it makes it kind of curl around on itself, so you can't really see the cut edges). Then I wrapped the velvet around the wire and secured usuing a hot glue gun. Then I cut the flowers from the stems and hot glued onto the velvet. I've no idea where it will go yet, but I really like it. As I had the sewing machine out, I thought I'd have another bash at making the beautiful roses from the [Sew Pretty Homestyle] book. I make them from time to time, but they never look as good as the ones in the book. I think I just find it easier to create roses in my own way, rather than follow instructions. On a totally unrelated matter, how cute is this little wooden food mixer? Gorgeous Girl and I were in [Early Learning Centre], and I told her she could choose a toy. She chose this. I think cooking with her mummy is starting to have an effect!
