ruffles & garlands ~ current projects

I've just started making a new garland. I've literally only just started, and there is lots left to do, but as I'm totally out of wooden letters (more have been ordered), ribbon and glitter - both of which I can get at the weekend - all I can do at the moment is make the base cards. This is the fun part anyway, I enjoy making each one look different. This one is going to be a birthday garland spelling out 'birthday wishes', which I thought sounded nicer that 'happy birthday'.

Last year, I made a ruffle to put around a birthday cake. It looked so pretty. You can read the very simple instructions of how I made it in [this post]
It added such a pretty and feminine touch to the cake, shown here. Shortly afterwards, I re-used the ruffle for another project, so this week I decided to make two new ones. I always use the same cake tin, so used that as my size guide. Now I have a pink ruffle, and a tea dyed ruffle all ready for decorating cakes. I don't make birthday cakes from scratch (especially when it comes to making one for myself), I prefer to ask Betty Crocker to lend a helping hand. She makes life easier and I can guarantee they'll end up perfectly cooked. I normally get a choccy cake, but this year, I've sourced a cake mix that isn't available in British supermakets. Hope it's tasty! Has anyone had the lemon flavoured cake before? Is it nice? I'm not American, but I do like to be able to buy tinned pumpkin and other hard to find American foodstuffs. I buy mine from [American Sweets] It's a great website, so if you are finding it hard to find tinned pumpkin in the UK, you can find it here (though they are out of stock of Libby's but do have an alternative brand). They also stock more of a selection of Betty Crocker cake mixes that we can find in our supermarkets, like the lemon flavour.

The velvet ribbon used on the tea stained ruffle is just beautiful. I've actually bought it to use on my Christmas pressies this year (using the exactly the same style & gift wrap as last year, seen [here], but I couldn't resist using in a little project first. Best of all, it's half price, from [cox & cox] so if you hurry, you might still be able to get some yourself. It has been nice to work on a couple of small projects like this. Over the summer I seemed to lose my crafty mojo, it's nice to feel that it's coming back!
I'll post pictures of the birthday garland once it's finished. I think I'll start working on pieces for a Christmas garland too!
