simply sunday

It's the London Marathon today. It's going to be a muggy, showery, and warm day, I am glad I'm not running, though I wish all the runners Good Luck! Much easier to watch them on TV than to take part I think! We are planning a lovely 'family day' today, just staying at home, doing nothing in particular and enjoying being together. My favourite kind of day.

The house feels a bit empty at the moment. The sofas from the living room have been taken away to their new home. We really did not want to just throw them out, so I asked my family if they knew of anyone who would like them. A friend of my sister was more than happy to take them off our hands, so yesterday my Dad, Brother in Law, and nephew came round with a van and took them away.

I joked that we'd be sitting on cardboard boxes until the new furniture arrived, but we still have a leather armchair in there.
The living room before ~ though I should point out I took the photo in August last year, on an extremely rare 'Tidy Day'! This is how the room looks at the moment. The window end of the room. Where the table is on the right is where the armchair usually lives, and will go back when the new stuff arrives, this coming Friday. (in case you were wondering, yes, the little table is goning to be painted soon!) I loved being able to give the floor a good clean, and I really like how much lighter it feels without a sofa in front of the window. Opens up the whole room. The chair that will go in the window area is quite slim. I am excited to think of how it will look at Christmas. Usually the tree is wedged between the window and the back of the sofa [like this], but this year we'll be able to see the tree in all its glory and sit beside it.

What you can't see is the state of the walls. My very own little Banksy has been creative, and scribbled over sections of wall! I have to admit that I quite like seeing her works of art, but it does make the room look messy. So ... you've guessed it, the room is going to be painted! The new furniture is covered in plain fabrics, so we are thinking of having a beigey/coffee colour. The current colour is Eau de Nil, but more of a pale coffee would be better. Yey. We get to choose more paint!

I thought I'd show you something, to prove that I don't paint everything in sight!
Recently, my Mother in Law told my husband that she was going to throw out a piece of garage furniture that belonged to my late Father in Law. My husband was horrified, and said he'd love to take it home and use it in our garage. It needed cleaning, and some of the decoration needs to be fixed back on, but other than that it was fine. Of course, in my mind I had already painted it and changed the knobs, until I saw it. It was so lovely, that it would be just awful to cover it in paint. (You can see the MIL's dog in the background!)
The husband spent several evenings out in the garage, sanding it down and using a stain to feed the wood and bring it back to life.

Now it looks like this (rubbish photo I know, but the best I could get) It really is beautiful, the photo does it no justice whatsoever. It might seem like a terrible waste to have it out in the garage, but it is absolutely perfect there, and I think my hubby likes that he's carried on using it in the same way as his Dad. It also looks rather nice alongside the heavy table we have in there.
