revamping & recycling on a rainy day

When it's cold and wet outside it's nice to stay cosy inside and work on a few projects.

It's that time of year again, when I buy new plimsolls for Spring & Summer. If I can buy floral printed ones then I do so, but if not, I get plain white ones and pretty them up. I take ribbon roses and stitch to the plimsolls. I only sew them on the front and outer side of each shoe. Once stitched in place, I then dab a small dollop of fabric glue, to make them really secure. I don't worry about them not being exactly, as long as the roses look more or less the same on each shoe then that's fine with me. You can also use ribbon instead of laces, as shown [here], though this isn't really suitable if you will be walking a long distance, as the ribbon works its way loose after a while.
If you are wondering if I really wear them, then I think this photo will answer the question. I prettied up these plimsolls last January. They need to go out, but I simply can't bear to part with them yet!

I'm still enjoying changing old jewellery into something new. Yesterday I sorted out all of my broken or unworn necklaces, bracelets and earrings. I got to work, and after about an hour or so, I'd made a necklace for myself. I feel like a bit of a fraud saying 'I made this', because all I've done is reused the links from one necklace, and threaded with pearls from a necklace and a bracelet, and used an earring for the centre. It's more of a case of re-jiggling and re-attaching. I am very happy with how it turned out. I really enjoyed doing this, even though it was quite fiddly and I was constantly interrupted by a tiny girl asking 'what are you doing Mummy?'! So much so, that I had to have another go today. I took this... and turned it into this .. I know I'm going to make something else this week too, probably a bracelet.
I would encourage anyone tempted to refashion their jewellery to give it a go. Everyone has odd earrings and broken necklaces kicking around, and how many times have you looked at an earring or brooch and thought how nice they'd be on a necklace? Well, why not try turning them into something new? You have nothing to lose.
Everything that I've used had been destined to go in the bin. Instead I have two 'new' pieces of jewellery and a new crafty project that I can hopefully improve on over time.
