taking time to enjoy the season

I noticed that the rose by the front gate had a single lonely bloom on it. Roses may look delicate and fragile, but in reality they are as tough as old boots! Seems so wrong and yet such a treat to have a single rose sitting amongst the lights and the snow.

I've been adding extra festive touches around the house, snuggling up with Gorgeous Girl and watching Christmas films, and enjoying the coldness of the ice and snow outside. I love this little musical Father Christmas. I bought him several years ago for no more than a few pounds. The music he plays is 'we wish you a merry Christmas'. At the weekend we bought some candles and bits and pieces to have on the Christmas table. On Saturday I bought two small bouquets of roses. They are fine, I've stashed them in the garage where it's nice and cold, to keep them fresh. I adore the pale colours.
We bought new cutlery too. We bought Cath Kidston cutlery for Easter this year, which I was so excited about ~ the ones with the creamy floral handles. I treated each piece carefully, and wouldn't put any of it in the dishwasher. Despite careful handwashing, every single handle has come loose. It's the problem with that style of cutlery, and nothing you can do about it. I still love it, but having to glue the knives, forks and spoons back into the handles has become very tiresome. I was thrilled to be able to select new, vintage looking cutlery. I'm tragic like that! And it works well alongside the Cath cutlery. I love it when you can see how everything will work together.

I also bought these votive holders. I took photos in full daylight and as it was getting dark to show how pretty they look. I only paid a few pounds for them, but my mind is whirring with ideas. How simple would it be to copy these? You could use any scraps of thick lace or offcuts of net, and glue around plain candle holders or small glass jars, finishing off with trim around the top and bottom. So easy, and yet so pretty. I know I'll be making a few of these myself next year.
Something else to add to my list! So far I have 4 different projects that I want to work on during the year, ready for Christmas 2010!!!
