Those of you who have been reading this blog for a while already know that I always have Christmas on my mind, and like to get things ready throughout the year. Earlier this week I found some tiny pink trees online, I ordered two. In fact, I ordered them on Thursday and they arrived yesterday morning (right there is the beauty of ordering stuff for Christmas in summer, they are in stock and turn up promptly).
I'd recently seen a fantastic idea of having a tiny tree anchored in a teacup. As this tree is destined to be in the kitchen this December, I thought the teacup idea was perfect and found an old oversized teacup that I no longer use. I tried many ways to secure the tree inside the cup. Craft glue, superglue, florists' foam, even velcro. Nothing worked. I had a lightbulb moment and realised I needed something that would give weight to the cup and hold the base of the tree tightly - air drying clay. This morning I went out and bought some air drying clay, and am delighted to report that it works brilliantly.
Just squoosh up a good dollop of the clay and push into the cup. The cup needs to be half full of clay, then you push the tree down into the clay, and push the clay around the tree. Now it can dry out in the sun, and I'll stash it away in the garage until I need it.
While in the festive mood, I found the smallest baubles I had and covered them in glitter. They may or may not be used on the tiny pink trees. Not sure yet.
Another bonus to doing Christmas crafty things at this time of year means you can hang them up outside to dry quickly. They looked so pretty hanging up on the honeysuckle in the sunshine.
