starting to feel like Christmas

On Friday I could resist no longer, and with the girl safely at school, the husband at work, I decided to get the tree out of the garage and get it decorated.

We chose a corker this year. Not too spindly, but a good, compact, and beautiful shape. If you read my tweets you will know that I solved the problem of getting it to stay straight by sawing and wedging a bit of 2 by 2 in the pot!

It looks lovely. I use 'The dance of the sugarplum fairy' as my inspiration. On the tree I've tied two pairs of pointe shoes. There are a couple of tiaras on the tree too, because ballet dancers often wear tiaras.

A tutu and some tiny ballet slippers hang on the mirror above the mantelpiece. The mantelpiece itself is a smidge overdressed, but I like it! The pink tulle tree and the pom pom garland were made by yours truly. Not sure if you can make it out, but if you can, the tiny crown was the one I wore on my wedding day. It's our 7th wedding anniversary this week, and I always bring my little crown out at Christmas as both reminder of our special day and because it works well as a decoration.

I just love using pink and pastel colours for Christmas. It's vintage looking and girly, and for me, Christmas always makes me think of 'The Nutcracker', so it feels natural to take inspiration from it. I think this is the third year running that we've decorated in this way, and I still love it so much I know it will be the same next year too!

I still have a bit more to do, but not much. It'll be finished by Tuesday. Including putting lights on the tree on the veranda of Gingerbread House. The wreath on the door of the garage (below), but the one of the front door is going to be revamped before I put it up. I was going to say that it hasn't all been Christmas related this weekend, but I'd be wrong.

The choice of films has been distinctly festive. The freezer is stocked with vitals for Christmas Film Watching! And when I cooked our Sunday lunch of roast lamb today, I gave myself a little reminder of cooking roast potatoes with goose fat as I'm going to cook them like this on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. I've not cooked them this way for a while, and I forget how fantastic they taste. If you've never used goose fat for your roast spuds before, try it. Honestly, the difference it makes is amazing. I've also found time to sit outside, watching the clouds and enjoying the fairy lights. Once all Christmas prep has been done, I'm going to make sure I sit an enjoy how it all looks. It's so easy to think 'good that's done' and not notice it anymore. I want to savour how pretty everything looks before I have to take it all back down again!
