I wanted to have a display of fake cakes in the kitchen. I thought about making them from fabric, but it would have taken ages. This was much quicker, and fun to do. In a bowl I mixed plain (all purpose) flour, a lot of salt, and for colour and fragance, a good dash of ground cloves and some sifted cocoa powder.
I don't measure things out, so I can't give you exact amounts. As the cakes aren't for eating it really doesn't matter. You just need plenty of salt and flour. I add cocoa powder and cloves as an extra, but they can be left out. Mix with water until you have a dough. It looks good enough to eat, but seriously, DON'T! Scoop the mixture into cake cases and bake in the oven. This takes about 20 minutes or so.
Then decorate. I used some shop bought icing, and decorated with sugar flowers, sugar balls and glitter, but I also used non edible pretties such as silk flowers, seed pearls, beads and ribbon bows. The icing just dries out and sets hard. The cakes will be fine in a dry room like a kitchen, but if they were in a damp, humid atmosphere they'd go mouldy and disgusting.
Then arrange and enjoy the display for as long as you choose.Just make sure everyone knows not to eat them. I've put these up high on a shelf so Gorgeous Girl can't reach them.
