Several weeks ago Gorgeous Girl asked me to make a scarecrow for her little vegetable garden this year. No problem, I thought, that should be fun. Then she added 'like Jess the cat'. Yikes. I have never made a scarecrow, and had no idea how to make a cat one! Last week I realised that time was ticking and that I needed to get on with things. I gathered some fabric, garden canes and straw and got to work. I was quietly pleased with how Jess the cat scarecrow turned out,and more importantly, Gorgeous Girl was happy with him! Spring has finally sprung here in the UK. Days are still chilly,but in between raindrops we are having sunny days, and the spring flowers are out and smiling in the sunshine.
I've already seen two butterflies this year, yesterday I spotted a busy bumble bee, and we have absolutely loads of little Ladybirds making themselves at home.
Last Wednesday, Gorgeous Girl and I got some pots ready, and threw in some seeds. Literally in her case! She takes after her mama and has green fingers. Lots of signs of life already. I must thin out the lettuces for her soon, oh and ignore the fact that I've written 'pumpkin' without the second 'p'!!!
we still have more seeds to sow. With a bit of luck, we'll be able to harvest our own potatoes, tomatoes, aubergine, cucumber, pumpkin, carrots, runner beans, sweetcorn and lettuce this year! We grow them in pots in both front and back gardens too. What are you going to be growing this year? Time to start thinking about it, if you haven't already!
I was trying to find a good photo of Gingerbread Garden, which is Little One's garden next to her playhouse in the back garden. This is the best I could find. It's just a tiny little patch, big enough for a few veggies. It's her place to learn about gardening. You can see we have a little washing line rigged up too, so she can hang up her dollies just washed clothing.
Hopefully it will look as full and inviting this year as it did when I took this photo.
