inspiration and giveaway details

Earlier this week I decided I needed a book bag. I'm always carrying books and magazines with me around the house, so if I get a moment I can have a look through them. After the way the tablecloth turned out, I thought I'd make a ruffly one. So I did. I thought it would be quicker to make than the tablecloth, but it almost took the same amount of time!
It too was made from part of a white sheet. I decided to tea dye it and add a silk rose. Pretty. I so liked the colour that I also tea dyed the tablecloth too!

I've been doing quite a bit of tea dyeing lately. A couple of weeks ago I was in the kitchen and had a sudden idea to use a piece of net that I'd bought as a remnant. I love rifling through remnant piles in fabric shops, you can get some real bargains. The net was a bargain, it was just £2. At the time I had no idea what to do with it ,then I thought I could put it on our back door, over the glass. In all the years we have lived here, we've never had any kind of window treatment on the back door. I know it's a rubbish photo, but you get the idea of how hazy and soft it makes the light coming in through the door.

Originally the net was bright sparkling white, so I dunked it in tea and aged it. After that I topped it with a strand of flowers that I am calling vintage. I wore them in a circlet on my head when I was a bridesmaid at my brother's wedding. Back then I hated it, it had curling ribbon hanging down the back (!) and blue and pink flowers added to tie in with the bouquets, but the white flowers were so pretty that I hung on to them, for the past 17 years or so!. I'm glad I did. They have naturally aged nicely, and look pretty on top of the net. I have been very inspired by one of my newest books. It's Jessica McClintock's 'Simply Romantic Decorating'. It really is a beautiful book. I would dearly love to live in her world, where everything is antique, and elegant and beautiful. But I don't! It's really not possible when you have a toddler hurtling at speed around the house. If I had as many frills and ruffles and low tables dotted around, Gorgeous Girl would end up hurting herself. But I can take ideas and inspirations from her book, and dream about living in such a calm and elegant world. And that is why I've been adding ruffly touches here and there, to add a romantic feel to our home. I have more new books to talk about, but will do that another day.
