My husband thinks I am obsessed with changing door knobs and handles, and he's right.
Recently, after the bedroom had been redecorated I felt that the wardrobes didn't look quite 'right'. They are built in wardrobes, it wasn't that I thought they needed to be ripped out and replaced, they just needed a little updating to freshen them up.
We made a trip to the DIY shop and changed these...
.. to these pretty sparkly glass knobs.
As you can see from the first photo, it just made the doors look lighter and fresher, and I think they give a real 'shabby chic' air. A small (and inexpensive) change made a big difference. I must point out that when we moved in, the door knobs where white plastic and we bought the dark metal ones to replace them. They won't be wasted, I'll find another home for them one day. Along with some white ceramic ones with blue flowers that I also have kicking around in the garage. I never throw them away unless they are plain ugly plastic or cheap wooden ones. I know they'll never be used again. If you buy knobs or handles and find the screws that come with them aren't working with your door, don't worry. DIY shops sell so many different types of screws that you will easily be able to find the perfect size.
One of the first things that I felt needed to be changed when we moved to our home (almost 8 years ago now) were the knobs on the kitchen cabinets. They were horrible little wooden things and I hated them. We changed them for these...
There is a tiny chance that these will be changed again soon, but only if I can find something that I think would look fantastic. We are in the process of redecorating the kitchen (photos when it's finished), and it would be nice to give the kitchen cabinets a little update too. If not, I'm happy for these to stay. This is one of my favourites, it's on a bathroom cabinet that came with a plain handle, but when we saw this 'tap handle' looking knob we just had to get it.
Another fun door knob is this little chap..
Our little girl spotted it in the DIY shop when we were selecting the wardrobe handles. She really, really wanted it, and even though we had no idea where it would go, at £2 we decided to get it anyway. Once home, I had a sudden bright idea. In the living room Gorgeous Girl has a dolls' house. I thought it would be quite useful to have it as a handle on the front. So, my husband drilled a hole and backed it with a small piece of wood for extra width, and *ta da* the little lion had a home!
*Mums* a dolls' house is a superb source of extra storage. I use the one in my daughters bedroom to stash books and toys, and this one is ideal for stashing away her toys at the end of the day to make the living room look instantly tidy. If you've put off buying one because it will take up too much space or add to the clutter, think of it as a rather handy stack of shelves that you can cover up by closing the door!
