New fabric, new book, new machine

November 2008 will always be one of my favourite months. During that time I made no less than 5 Union Jack cushions (handsewn, you can see them on my Flickr photos), made from the baby clothes of my little girl. I loved that I had something I could see each day, bringing me happy memories from when she was a baby. I made fabric roses, fabric apples, and my core craft item, felt roses.
I hope will all my heart, that every month of 2009 will find me just as creative. I have a new sewing machine to play with. It will be here tomorrow. My hope is that I can get to grips with it quickly and be able to churn out all manner of things. It'll certainly make the Union Jack cushions quicker to make. I plan on making more, and to try to sell them online. They're actually good fun to make, and I love how our flag can look so feminine when made from floral fabric and the addition of lace.
This is the sewing machine. I have to come clean, and admit that the reason I really wanted this one, is because of the pinkness of it, it's the only one I've seen that's remotely pink. It's also quite basic, which I decided was the most important factor for me.
My first major project, once I've got the hang of the machine, is to make the new curtains for the kitchen. We have bought the fabric (complete with pink lining) and the heading tape. Once I've practiced with the sewing machine, it's all systems go for the curtains. I just love the sight of a new batch of fabric, sitting and waiting to be turned into something. I've made sure I've bought too much of both fabric and lining, so I can have leftovers to play with. And don't you just love the idea of pink lining for curtains?! It's also extra wide lining, so I'm hoping it will be easier than joining two pieces to give enough width.
Another book you can blame for my need of leftover fabric is this, which is utterly scrumptious. It comes with patterns in the back of the book, and has a very useful section about sewing machines too. The book is very confidence boosting, and is beautiful to look at. The use of colour and pattern is fabulous. No matter the level of your abilities, just reading a few pages of this book will make you feel that you CAN make things, and make them well. I love books that can do that. Even better, the author has a blog, which is equally as inspiring to read. [anna maria horner]
