the cherry on the cake

The biggest headache with a children's party is what to do to keep them entertained. The Girl is turning 7, so her friends are 6 and 7, a few of them will be a bit younger. Luckily, they are still at an age when 'pass the parcel' and 'musical statues' are acceptable.

We decided to have a 'pin the tail on a donkey' game, but wanted to Girl it Up a bit. Taking inspiration from the party invites (which are shown in previous post), we decided to have a large cupcake, with the aim of the game being to attach the cherry to the top.


Pretty simple to make. I've sewn it, but it could have easily been glued straight onto the backing card.

The cupcake case is made by folding two pieces of felt like a fan, then stitching down each crease to hold them in place.

The cherry on top is made from plastic sandwiched by two pieces of felt, and stitched round. I placed a green pipecleaner between the pieces before sewing, for a stalk.
Velcro is then stuck on the back. I've made sure I use the rougher, looped side of Velcro on the cherry, so if it is placed anywhere on the felt cake, it will stick. It's perfect for tiny hands, and no danger of anyone getting pierced by a misplaced pin wielded by a blindfolded child.

Whoever gets the cherry on as close to perfect as possible will be the winner, but I'm going to get the lucky dip bucket full of wrapped treats, and every child who tries can select a little something from that. That should stop any arguing, tears, and tantrums.
The Girl has a bit of a cold, so I kept her off school today. She loved that she was allowed to add the writing to her game.

Have yet to tell the husband that another key game is going to be throwing wet sponges at his head. I'll save that for closer to the time!
