the trouble with vinegar ...

.. is the smell.
Which is a bit of a problem if you want to try making homemade cleaning products.

I've been thinking about cleaning products alot lately, because yet again I'm on a [Flylady] kick.
I love [Ecover] cleaning stuff, and use it all the time. But a few weeks ago, I lost my mind and was tempted by the fresh sounding name of a bottle of Flash.
When I got it home and spritzed it on the bathroom sinks, the bright lurid lime green colour worried me quite a bit. When you are used to the pale, pale, lemony hue of Ecover, seeing something to garishly bright is a bit of shock. I knew it was green when I bought it, I just didn't expect it to be quite so bright when I sprayed it. I shall never buy it again.

Note the difference.
I'm using it up as fast as I can, so I can use the empty spray bottle. I don't like it, and the smell isn't as fresh and clean smelling as I hoped.

I like the idea of making my own cleaning products, most of which I've seen online include vinegar. I know vinegar is fantastic for many things, but it's the smell. Eww. The smell! Don't get me wrong, when I'm at the seaside with a bag of chips in my hand, then I love them to have dash of vinegar on them. Unless it's cold and we're having to eat them in the car, then I prefer not. The smell in a confined space makes me feel queasy.

When I've seen cleaning 'recipes' and have been tempted, I've then changed my mind because of the vinegar.

But when I pinned an idea using vinegar infused with orange, I thought I'd give it a go.

I followed the instructions earlier today.

It needs to sit and steep for two weeks. Then I can start using it. I just hope the smell of the orange peel is a lot stronger than the vinegar. If it turns out to be a success, then I'd try it again with a mixture of grapefruit and lemon peel.

This idea came from [fountain avenue kitchen]. Take a look at the 'how to', and read the comments. There are lots of good ideas and suggestions from people who have tried this out already.
