jewellery storage

This is how I store the rings that I wear on a regular basis.

Clearly, it's not ideal. I don't care for jewellery boxes, I tend to drape necklaces on Ruby the mannequin, leave rings on ceramic flowers, windowsills, shelves, and anywhere else I take them off and leave them. Brooches are pinned on the side of a hatbox. Bracelets live on a shelf in my wardrobe. I wish I did like jewellery boxes, it would make life easier than having everything spread around!

I would so love to tell you that I thought of a genius way of storing rings, but it isn't mine. I found it yesterday when I surfed into a brilliant site that I've mentioned before.

Click on this link, to visit Tea Rose Home and see the original tutorial on how to make a ring display case.
I hope that you will, because her tutorial is very detailed, and will answer any questions.

Basically, she turned a small wooden frame into a display case for her rings. She used rolls of padding and fabric as cushions that rings are pushed between to hold them in place. I LOVED the idea, and during the wee hours of this morning when I couldn't sleep, I was thinking about how I could make it.

I didn't have a wooden frame, so I had to make one. I used a small picture frame I wasn't using.

    1. picture frame. And ideal one as it had quite deep sides. The front of this will become the bottom of my box. (Hope this makes sense)
    2. remove backing, take out and discard glass. Pull off stand, and pull out the metal clips that hold everything in.
    3. Take backing piece, and staple inside (where the glass would normally sit), this is the base of your box.
    4. Paint in chosen colour.
    5. size of frame used
    6. Padding roll. For the clear explanation, click on the link to 'Tea Rose Home'. I followed the instructions but made them slightly differently. I used a roll of card in between the padding, so each roll had some firmness.

You make enough padded rolls to fill the entire length of the box. I had some of the faux suede left over from when I made my [inspiration board], I thought it was perfect for this project too. Then they are glued in place, the sides pushed down to make them neat.

Leave it to dry, then push the rings in between the cushions. Fantastic! It cost me absolutely nothing to make as I used whatever I could find in garage and house. This is such a good idea. It keeps the rings safe, I can see at a glance which ones are there, and it stores nicely inside my wardrobe. I must be honest though, and tell you that I've still got a few rings sitting on the ceramic rose. It's handy, and I like seeing them there. But I am really pleased to have found a way of stashing the rest of them in such an organised manner. It was so easy to make too. I need to make a variation on this now, for my brooches.
