mannequin as mummy

Last week I got my hands on a copy of the October editoin of US Country Living. It had lots of Halloween ideas in it, but the thing that caught my eye most was an advert. I thought that I'd have a go at creating my own mummy, using Ruby the mannequin. Ruby is normally dressed in a pretty way. I bought a polystyrene skull and placed on the top of the mannequin, then tore inexpensive fabric up into strips and soaked it in the usual manner to age it. It took roughly 6 metres of fabric to create the mummy. I made my bandages quite thick, to make wrapping quicker. This is how Ruby looked first thing this morning. I realised quite quickly that I needed to give the space from the bottom of the body to the feet a solid base so the bandages could be wrapped round. I used a sheet of semi stiff card and curved it around. The arms were made from rolled up newspaper.

After a couple of hours, Ruby had been turned into a mummy. Not as good as the ones in the advert, but not too bad. I was getting a bit 'Hervé Léger' at times, wrapping the bandages too neatly, so I made it a bit scruffy in places and added knotted sections. Then I draped fake cobweb all over her. Gorgeous Girl is holding a Halloween party for 7 of her friends, but I'm wondering if the mummy might be a bit too scary for them. I'm going to drape some fairy lights over her, to stop her scaring the children too much!
