cakes on a rainy day
I love rainy days. I don't mind being out in the rain, and I love being home when it rains. Either way I'm happy.
There is something so cosy about the house being dark because of grey cloud and raindrops outside. I light candles inside ..
and out. I love seeing the flame flickering in the lantern that I hung on the front of Gingerbread House (daughters playhouse) last week.
It just makes me smile whenever I look outside and see the glow.
As soon as the rain started today I knew the Girl and I would get in the kitchen and start baking.
I've had this book for ages, but hadn't used any recipes. I am trying hard to stick to my 'Make at least one recipe from each cookbook before I die' pledge. So I chose the basic vanilla recipe for the fairy cake sponge.
I managed to get it mixed, spooned into cases and in the oven before my Little Helper realised what I was doing. I love her helping me, but sometimes it's just a whole lot easier if I can get this part done without interruption.
They were soon baked and ready for decorating.
I have been itching to try out this Better Crocker icing in a tin since I bought it.
it's really good. I am rubbish at icing and decorating cakes, but this makes it a lot quicker and the end results aren't too bad. I think you can tell that a Tiny Girl has had a hand in chucking on the pink sprinkles!
I couldn't resist putting them in paper cuffs and adding little flags. A riot of colour when it's so bleak outside.
I've done my daily chores, kept the girl entertained (still summer hols for the children here), and now I am free to get myself cosy on the sofa, with a cup of tea and a cake, and a few magazines. Another favourite thing to do if I get the chance.
I doubt if I'll get to spend much time reading though, I've promised The Girl we'll start working on more paper pumpkins today (see previous post).
Still raining. Gorgeous.
