paint & cake

I've had my paintbrush out today. It's been a while since I painted anything (sort of!).

I've had this little table by the sofa on my 'To Do' list for months. The sofa has now been replaced, and the table seemed to be even more obvious than before. Today I've painted it and then scuffed it up to give it a shabby look.

Ahh. I like it much better now. And I got my painting fix too!
Here is the new sofa.
It's very 'matchy matchy' to the wallpaper. I'm not sure if I really want the wallpaper changed, or if we will keep it as it is. While the sofa seems to vanish into the wall in photos, in real life it looks rather elegant. So I think we can live with it for a while before making any changes. Besides, I'd rather make a few changes with the lampshades, as we still haven't replaced the ceiling shades with mini chandeliers.

Remember the sugar cubes I made recently? I said I planned on using them as cake decorations. At the weekend I did just that. It was my Dad's birthday, and my Mum asked me to bake a sponge cake for him.

I put it on a cake stand, then attached cellophane and tissue around the cake stand, just to pretty it all up a bit. I scattered sugar cubes over the top. While making the blue ones on Friday, I pushed in cut down cocktail sticks so some of the hearts could stand up. I borrowed the label idea from 'Alice in Wonderland'. I thought this was an idea worth sharing. It made a basic sponge cake look a bit special, and was a good way of using the sugar cubes. Apparently one of my nephews loves to crunch on sugar cubes (eww), so I'm sure he would have enjoyed them!
