We went into town on Saturday. You just know I'm going to show you the spoils from my latest Primark spree, but before I do, I want to show you a magazine. I've been trying to track this down for a few weeks now. Ok, to be completely truthful, I've been sending the husband into WHSmith to find it for me. He had no luck, but on Saturday it was finally on the shelf.
Over the years I dropped the look, it was just too much effort for me to do each day. I'm lazy when it comes to my looks, and I'd rather tie my hair back, wear jeans and a comfy top, and a lipstick that doesn't need such precise application. I may not do the whole vintage look, but I still can't resist buying clothes with a hint of the 50's style (the recent skirt from Primark being the perfect example).
So I have total respect for anyone who lives their life dressing in a retro manner, even dressing their homes to match the era they love. This magazine is full of people like that. Absolutely fascinating to read.
One page that caught my eye featured this wedding.
Those floral frocks are just beautiful, and I liked the red bridesmaid dress. It reminded me of the dress I wore for my wedding, a dark red prom style dress that was actually a bridesmaid dress. I fell in love with it, but it was mainly out of necessity. If I'd worn a long white dress I'd have spilt Kir Royale down the front, or caught the bottom of it on a nail and ripped it. I'm a clumsy oaf, so needed something shorter and darker, and dare I say it - practical. I also liked the idea of being able to wear it again for another occasion. Our wedding photos were taken in black & white, so you can't see the exact colour, but you can tell it was dark.
No veil, veils were not for me. Almost 7 years later I still love that dress.
The wedding car was pretty fabulous, a vintage Morris Minor. I so enjoyed travelling in this car!
Things were chosen because they were liked, not because we they had a vintage look or feel. That was just a happy coincidence. So while I may not live a completely vintage stylelife, I do still have bits of vintage-ness running through it. And clearly, the vintage style is something that I really do like.
Which leads me nicely onto a purchase I made that I just had to share with you. If you love wicker style bags, then get thee down to Primark. I have to say that I only saw this one bag in the entire shop (and I looked thoroughly to see if they had any more), so they may be selling out quickly.
It has a long handle so it can be worn across the body. I'm not convinced I like it that way. I'll either use it as a clutch bag, or if I can find a suitable small handle, will replace it with that. No rush, I'll take my time before I make any changes. I just had to get it when I saw it.
Inside is lined with floral fabric.
Then I saw this necklace that I rather liked. There were bits of it I wasn't so keen on (like the tassel chain parts, they made it feel it feel oddly lopsided), but I knew I could easily make changes.
After ten minutes or so, I'd replaced the chunky section of chain with something less chunky, removed a leaf charm, added an extra flower, replaced a tassel with a bow, and 'caught' the other one up with a link then repositioned. I liked the basic design, but I like it a lot more now I've altered it.
When a necklace has cost just £3, I don't hesitate in making changes. And I really like the 'vintage junk' feel to it too.Vintage morris minor hired from [Champagne Classics]
