Simple ideas

Thought I'd show some small festive touches from around the house. To show that you don't need lots of space, or tons of time or even big gestures to make your home look Christmassy. Sometimes the smallest touches are the best.

The gingerbread house is now in another room, the lights I had in the glass dish have been used elsewhere, so I needed something else for the kitchen table. I used my recently purchased two tier cake stand, placing it on top of my wire cake stand for extra height first. It only has a few baubles, some strands of lametta, and two mercurised candle holders used as tiny vases, but it looks so pretty. Especially as the sun came out and shined right on it just as I was about to take a photo.

In the living room I've got this little tree on the mantelpiece, it looks so sweet and is decorated in things I had around the home ... ... the ballerina cake decorations I covered in glitter during the summer, dried roses that I hung upside down to dry out, net bows attached with wire, and a piece of ribbon that I found in my sewing box. The champagne bucket is never used for champagne, I use it as a vase. It looks perfect holding this tree. An orange studded with cloves. Just the one, as it's going to go mouldy. I haven't done it 'properly', i.e, dried it out slowly over several weeks. This adds 'instant Christmas' scent and looks rather lovely, especially with the bay leaves that I've pushed between the oranges. Last year I made the fastest wreath ever, when I twisted wired garland around into a circle, decorated with fabric apples and lights, and hung on the back door in the kitchen. Ideally, I want a beautiful wreath made from vintage baubles, but I left it too late to start this year. My short cut version uses the same garland wreath from last year, into which I have wired clusters of plastic baubles and topped with a net bow. It took about 20 minutes to do, and has given me a good idea of how many decorations I will need for a full wreath. I plan to make my 'vintage bauble wreath' my 'To Do' project during 2010, it will take a lot of time and a lot of decorations. Something not to be hurried. I'll start in February and work on it throughout the year. In the meantime, this does the job nicely ...
